St. John’s, NL – January 15, 2009 – Camouflage Software Inc. is announcing their plans to team up with the Information Access and Privacy Protection Office of Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for Newfoundland and Labrador (OIPC) in support of Data Privacy Day (DPD) on January 28, 2009.
First celebrated within the European Union, DPD celebrations were introduced to North America in 2008 to further increase awareness around data privacy and associated issues. The day is designed to help educate the general public and bring together privacy professionals, corporations, government officials and academics around the world to discuss data privacy problems and concerns. DPD also aims to promote international teamwork and understanding around privacy issues.
From 11:30am to 1:30pm, an information booth in the Smallwoood Centre (University Centre) at Memorial University of Newfoundland will offer print materials on such topics as phishing, identity theft, and privacy in social networking.
From 3:00pm to 4:00pm, a general interest lecture titled “I Know What You Did Last Summer: Stories of Personal Data Loss from 2008” will take place in ER 3005B in MUN’s Earth Sciences building. The talk will present the variety of ways that data is lost by showcasing local and international stories of data loss and theft over the past year, such as the recent Macdonald Drive Junior High hacking incident, and the LimeWire data loss at the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Health and Community Services. Speakers will include Dr. David Morgan, Director of Privacy Research at Camouflage Software, Lionel Clarke, an investigator from the OIPC and Rosemary Smith, Co-ordinator of MUN’s Information Access and Privacy Protection Office.
Wrapping up the day’s festivities, Camouflage Software will host a “Privacy After Hours” networking event for local privacy professionals from 5:30-7:00pm at The Keg restaurant in downtown St. John’s. The Privacy After Hours (PAH) series was created by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) to help privacy professionals network and socialize with one another in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. (IAPP Membership is not required to attend)
