Platform and Database Independence

As an enterprise-wide solution, Camouflage is built on the open standards of Java, JDBC, and XML. This allows Camouflage to be deployed in a wide variety of environments and to connect to a wide range of database types.

The software can connect to any database where Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.5.0 and JDBC are supported. As an enterprise-wide solution, Camouflage also has support for flat files. The software exports data in flat file structure, intelligently masks the information, and then reassembles the data in its original flat file format.

Masking Transformers

The Camouflage masking transformers provide the logic for transforming data and enable clients to mask data in countless ways. The software comes packaged with a variety of pre-defined masking transformers that intelligently mask data in different ways. The transformers are divided into 5 broad categories.

  • Generators - Camouflage generates computationally correct values that pass application edits and/or checksum digits such as correct Social Security Numbers, credit card numbers, and account numbers.
  • Data Loaders - Camouflage loads and/or deletes sensitive data with several transformers.
  • Mutators - Camouflage mutates and/or shuffles data within the database in several ways.
  • Algorithmic Transformers - Camouflage uses a variety of algorithmic and/or encryption methods to mask or de-identify data in several unique ways.
  • Custom - Camouflage's robust scripting capability can be used alone or in combination with existing algorithms to accommodate virtually any custom masking requirement.

Relational Integrity

As is critical for all relational database environments, Camouflage maintains the integrity of database relationships in many ways.

  • Database Relational Integrity - If primary and foreign key relationships are defined at the database level, Camouflage automatically propagates changes throughout the database.
  • Application Relational Integrity - If relationships are defined at the application level, clients configure Camouflage to update associated key fields.
  • Cross Database Relational Integrity - In complex environments, Camouflage maintains relational integrity between integrated database systems.

Camouflage also allows users to maintain consistent data relationships across different applications. For example, when masking enterprise data, Camouflage enables users to mask data in one application consistently with data stored in another application. The software also allows users to maintain consistent data across time and to de-mask data for refresh purposes.

Reporting Capability

Recent privacy legislation requires law enforcement officials and auditors to assess the security measures undertaken by organizations to protect sensitive information. Camouflage generates reports that distinctly demonstrate due diligence regarding the protection of confidential information in non-production environments. The software incorporates three core reports that allow clients to view before and after images of the de-identified data, to view masking configuration details, and to view impacted objects that have been modified by masking configurations.

Scripting Capability

To meet the exclusive masking needs of each client, Camouflage supports a robust scripting capability that can be used alone, or in conjunction with the pre-defined masking transformers. The scripting capability facilitates in-depth, intelligent masking, allowing clients to create an unlimited number of masking algorithms.
